The short answer is four to six months. That is enough time to design properly, redraft twice, and still hold the rooms you actually want. But averages hide the cases that matter.
Book a year ahead for these
- Anything over Christmas and New Year in Goa, Kerala or Rajasthan. The good properties are gone by March.
- Peak-season safari camps in Kaziranga and the central Indian parks, particularly the small ones with six or eight rooms.
- Ladakh in July and August. Not the hotels — the flights. Leh has limited capacity and fares climb steeply.
- Bhutan in spring and autumn. Licensed guide and vehicle availability is the constraint, not rooms.
- Festival dates — Pushkar, Hornbill, Konark, Rath Yatra in Puri. Accommodation within reach of the event goes early.
- Any trip with a fixed, immovable date such as an anniversary or a school holiday.
Where you can be relaxed
Odisha, most of the south outside Christmas, the Golden Triangle in the shoulder months, and almost anything in the monsoon. Six to eight weeks is plenty, and we have put good trips together in three.
What actually takes the time
Not the booking — the deciding. Most of our clients spend two or three weeks going back and forth on the shape of the trip before anything is confirmed. Start the conversation early even if you are not ready to commit; it costs nothing and it is the part that benefits from time.
