Varanasi & the Ganges

The ghats at first light from a private boat, and an evening aarti watched from the water rather than the crush on the steps.
Typical duration

Overview

Varanasi is not a comfortable place and it is not supposed to be. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth and it conducts its most private business – washing, praying, cremation – entirely in public, on a riverbank, at dawn.

Most visitors get two hours of it between trains. We would rather give you three nights, a guide who grew up on the ghats, and the sense to stay out of the way.

Highlights

What makes this one worth doing

  • A private boat on the river before sunrise
  • Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh, watched from the water
  • The back lanes of the old city with someone who lives in them
  • Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, in the quiet of the afternoon
  • A morning of classical music in a family home
  • Rishikesh upstream, if you want the Ganges calm as well as crowded
Best for
Photography, Pilgrimage, Short breaks, Second trips to India

The practical part

Before you ask us to quote

What a quote usually includes

  • Riverside accommodation, ideally with a view of the ghats
  • Private boat with a boatman for two sessions
  • A guide who is from the city, not sent to it
  • Airport and station transfers
  • Breakfast daily

Good to know

Photography around the cremation ghats is not permitted and we will ask you to respect that. Varanasi rewards early starts: the city is at its most extraordinary between five and eight in the morning.

Detail worth having before you go

Getting there

Varanasi has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. The overnight train from Delhi is an experience in itself if you have the time.

Nearest airport
Lal Bahadur Shastri International (VNS), Varanasi
Best months
November to February, when the mornings are cool and the river mist lifts slowly
Months to avoid
May and June for heat; August and September when the river runs high and the lower ghats flood
Typical budget
From about Rs 8,500 per person per day sharing, including a private boat at dawn
Currency
Indian rupee. The old city runs largely on cash.
Language
Hindi and Bhojpuri, with English in hotels
Health

Do not swim in the river. Bottled water only, and be careful with street food in your first day or two.

What to pack

Modest clothing, slip-on shoes, and a torch – the lanes are unlit and uneven after dark.

The dawn boat was quiet in a way I did not expect. Our guide barely spoke, which was exactly right.

Questions we are asked about this one

Is it acceptable to photograph the cremation ghats?

No. Manikarnika and Harishchandra are working cremation grounds and photography there is both prohibited and deeply resented. Your guide will tell you where to stand and where to put the camera away, and we would ask you to take that seriously.

How many nights does Varanasi need?

Three. One for the evening aarti, one for a dawn boat and the lanes, and one spare – because the thing that makes Varanasi worth it is usually the morning you did not plan.

Is it too intense for a first trip to India?

For some people, honestly, yes. It is loud, crowded and unfiltered about death. If it is your first time, we usually suggest it as the second stop rather than the first, once you have found your feet.
