It has more surviving medieval temples than anywhere else in the country, a coastline of empty beaches, and a craft tradition — Pattachitra, applique, silver filigree — still practised in working villages rather than showrooms.
It is also refreshingly unhurried. You can stand alone in front of a thousand-year-old temple on a Tuesday morning, which is not something Rajasthan can offer any more.

Non-Hindus may not enter Jagannath Temple in Puri; we arrange a rooftop view opposite, which is what most visitors do. October to February is the comfortable window — May and June are punishingly hot, and the monsoon can flood the coastal roads.
