The Andamans are a long way from everywhere – three hours flying from Chennai – and that is the point. Havelock has the beach that appears on every list, and it earns it: white sand, shallow turquoise water, and forest coming down to the sand.
Port Blair is not a beach town and people treat it as a transit stop, which is a mistake. The Cellular Jail is where the British held Indian independence prisoners in solitary confinement, and it is a serious, well-presented place.
