Singapore

Singapore

The easiest first trip abroad from India – short flights, no language barrier, and far more to it than the shopping.

Overview

Singapore is usually treated as a long weekend or a stopover, and it does both well. It is also a genuinely interesting city if you get past Orchard Road: four cultures in a very small space, some of the best cheap food anywhere, and a serious commitment to putting plants on things.

It pairs neatly with Malaysia, Bali or a Thai beach if you have longer.

Questions we are asked about this one

Is three nights enough?

For a first visit, yes – and it pairs neatly with Bali, Bangkok or a stopover on a longer route. Four or five if you want the islands or a slower pace with children.

Is it as expensive as people say?

Hotels are, transport is not, and food need not be. Hawker centres are among the best eating in Asia at a few dollars a dish. Most of a Singapore budget is the room.
