Maldives

Water villas when you want them, island guest houses when you would rather not – and the reefs that justify the seaplane.

Overview

The Maldives is sold almost entirely on photographs of one villa over one lagoon, which is a shame, because the interesting decisions are elsewhere: which atoll, how far from the airport, house reef or boat diving, resort or inhabited island.

We book both ends of the market. A guest house on a local island costs a fraction of a resort and puts you in a village; a resort buys you privacy and a reef on the doorstep. Plenty of trips do a few nights of each.

Highlights

What makes this one worth doing

  • A house reef good enough to snorkel straight off the beach
  • Manta and whale shark season in Baa Atoll, June to November
  • A few nights on an inhabited island for a fraction of resort rates
  • Sandbank picnics with nobody else on them
  • Dawn dhoni fishing with the crew
  • Adults-only properties where that matters

Suggested itinerary

One shape it could take

A starting point, not a fixed departure. Every element below can be lengthened, shortened or swapped.

Nights 1-2

Male or a nearby island

An easy start close to the airport, avoiding a late seaplane.
Nights 3-7

Your main atoll

Overwater or beach villa, half board
Resort or guest house, with diving, snorkelling and as little scheduling as you like.
Nights 8-9

Optional second island

Swap reef for reef, or resort for village, before flying home.

The practical part

Before you ask us to quote

What a quote usually includes

  • All accommodation, resort or guest house
  • Seaplane or speedboat transfers, which are a real cost here
  • Meal plan as agreed – half board, full board or all inclusive
  • Snorkelling equipment and house reef access
  • Green tax and service charges

Good to know

Seaplanes only fly in daylight, so a late arrival into Male often means a night near the airport – we plan around it rather than let it surprise you. Local islands are Muslim communities with modest dress expected away from designated beaches.

Detail worth having before you go

Getting there

Male is a direct flight from most Indian metros. From there it is a speedboat or a seaplane depending on the atoll – seaplanes only fly in daylight, which shapes your arrival time.

Nearest airport
Velana International (MLE), Male
Best months
November to April, the dry north-east monsoon
Months to avoid
May to July, when the south-west monsoon brings wind and rain
Typical budget
From about USD 250 per person per day sharing on a local island; resort islands start nearer USD 600 and rise without limit
Currency
Rufiyaa, but resorts price and bill in US dollars and take cards throughout
Language
Dhivehi, with English used everywhere in tourism
What to pack

Reef-safe sunblock, a rash vest for long snorkelling sessions, and something that covers shoulders and knees if you are staying on a local island.

We split it between a local island and a resort, which we would not have thought of. The first half was the interesting one.
