Gujarat is the trip for people who buy things. Not souvenirs – the embroidery, block-printing, bandhani and mirror-work of Kutch are done by families who have done them for generations, and you meet them at home rather than in a shop.
The Rann itself is the other reason: a salt flat the size of a small country that floods each monsoon and dries to a white crust, and in winter fills with flamingos and wild ass.

Gujarat is a dry state – alcohol needs a permit, which we arrange, and it is simply not sold in most places. The Rann Utsav runs December to February and the white desert is busiest then; full moon outside the festival is quieter and better.
Ahmedabad has good domestic connections and some international. Bhuj is an hour by air or seven by road.
The border areas of Kutch need a permit, issued the same day at Bhuj – we handle it. Carry photo ID for the checkposts.
The Rann is arid and the temperature swing between noon and dawn is severe. Dust affects some people; a scarf helps.
Layers, sunglasses, and a second bag – almost everyone leaves Kutch with more than they arrived with.
