Rajasthan

Lake palaces, blue streets and a desert fort that is still lived in – Rajasthan at a pace that leaves room for the afternoons.
Typical duration
9-12 nights
Best time
October to March
Pace

Overview

Rajasthan is the trip most people picture when they picture India, and it is also the one most easily ruined by rushing. Five cities in seven nights turns a remarkable state into a blur of car windows and hotel lobbies.

We build it the other way round: three or four bases, unhurried drives between them, and enough time in each to walk out after dark. You stay in family havelis and converted forts rather than business hotels, and eat where the owners eat.

Highlights

What makes this one worth doing

  • A lake-facing room in Udaipur, timed for the evening light
  • Jodhpur’s blue quarter on foot, before the heat
  • Two nights inside Jaisalmer Fort, which is still an inhabited town
  • A night under canvas in the Thar, well away from the camel-safari circuit
  • A private tour of a working block-printing or miniature-painting studio
  • Sunrise at Ranakpur’s marble temples with almost nobody there
Best for
First trips to India, Couples, Photography, Grand hotels

The practical part

Before you ask us to quote

What a quote usually includes

  • All accommodation, mostly heritage havelis and small forts
  • Private air-conditioned car with a driver for the whole route
  • Local guides in each city, booked by name
  • Monument entries listed on the itinerary
  • Breakfast daily, plus set dinners in the desert camp

Good to know

Drives between cities run three to six hours on good roads; we build them into the morning so the afternoons stay free. April to June is very hot and July to September brings rain, but both bring lower rates and far fewer people if you can take the weather.

Detail worth having before you go

Getting there

Fly into Delhi and out of Jaipur, or the reverse. The whole route works by road with a driver, which is how we normally run it – the drives are half the pleasure.

Nearest airport
Indira Gandhi International (DEL) in, Jaipur (JAI) out
Best months
November to February, when the desert nights are cold and the light is at its best
Months to avoid
May and June – Jaisalmer regularly passes 45C
Typical budget
From about Rs 12,000 per person per day sharing; heritage havelis and palace hotels push this well past Rs 30,000
Currency
Indian rupee. Cards are accepted almost everywhere; markets and camel handlers want cash.
Language
Hindi and Rajasthani, with English in every hotel
Health

Drink far more water than you think you need, and give yourself a slow first afternoon in Delhi.

What to pack

Layers – the same day can run from 8C at dawn to 28C by lunch. Sunglasses and a hat are not optional in the desert.

The desert night outside Jaisalmer was the best thing we have done as a family. No phone signal, a lot of stars, and our ten-year-old still tells people about it.

Questions we are asked about this one

Is a desert camp actually worth it?

The good ones are. The ones on the Sam dunes strip, with generators and a hundred tents, are not. We use smaller camps an hour further out where the only sound after dinner is the wind, and we would rather you skipped it entirely than did the touristy version.

How much driving is involved?

Rajasthan is big. Udaipur to Jodhpur is around five hours, Jodhpur to Jaisalmer another five. We break the long legs with a stop worth making – Ranakpur on the first, Osian on the second – so it is a day out rather than a transfer.

Can we do this trip in summer?

You can, but we will try to talk you out of May and June. Jaisalmer regularly passes 45C and the forts become genuinely unpleasant by ten in the morning. If those are your only dates, we would suggest the hills instead.
