The Golden Triangle

The classic first trip to India, arranged around dawn and dusk so you see the famous things without the coaches.

Overview

There is a reason this route is the standard introduction: three cities, short distances, and some of the most extraordinary buildings on earth. The problem is that everyone else is on it too.

Our version is about timing. The Taj at sunrise from the far bank, Old Delhi before the shops open, Amber Fort at opening rather than mid-morning. Same monuments, a completely different experience of them.

Highlights

What makes this one worth doing

  • The Taj Mahal at first light, entering as the gates open
  • A second view of it from Mehtab Bagh across the river at dusk
  • Old Delhi by rickshaw and on foot with a historian
  • Humayun’s Tomb in the late afternoon, when it empties
  • Amber Fort at opening time, before the crowds and the heat
  • An evening with a Delhi family who cook for their guests

First trips to India, Short breaks, Families

The practical part

Before you ask us to quote

What a quote usually includes

  • Hotels chosen for location rather than star rating
  • Private car and driver throughout
  • City guides in Delhi, Agra and Jaipur
  • All monument entries on the itinerary
  • Breakfast daily and one home-cooked dinner

Good to know

Six nights is comfortable; eight lets you add Ranthambore for tigers or slow Jaipur down. The Taj is closed on Fridays. Agra can be done as a long day from Delhi, but we would rather you slept there and saw it twice.

Detail worth having before you go

Getting there

Delhi is the obvious entry point from anywhere. Agra is now three hours from Delhi on the expressway, or a little over an hour on the Gatimaan train.

Nearest airport
Indira Gandhi International (DEL), Delhi
Best months
October to March. February is the sweet spot for the Taj at dawn.
Months to avoid
May and June for heat; late December and early January for the Delhi fog that delays flights
Typical budget
From about Rs 10,000 per person per day sharing, with a car and driver throughout
Currency
Indian rupee
Language
Hindi and English
Health

Delhi’s air is poor from November to January. If you are asthmatic, tell us and we will shift the days around.

What to pack

Something to cover shoulders and knees for Fatehpur Sikri, and shoes that come off easily.

Going to the Taj at sunrise instead of mid-morning was the single best piece of advice we were given. We had twenty minutes where it was almost empty.

Questions we are asked about this one

Is the Taj Mahal closed on Fridays?

Yes – it closes every Friday for prayers. It catches a lot of people out, and it is the main reason we build the route backwards from your Agra date rather than forwards from your arrival.

Is three cities in eight nights too rushed?

It is brisk but it works, because the drives are short and the expressway to Agra has taken an hour off the worst leg. If you have eleven nights we would add Ranthambore for tigers, which is the most natural extension.

What about Delhi air quality?

It is genuinely poor from November through January. If anyone in the party is asthmatic, tell us and we will flip the itinerary so Delhi is a single night at the end rather than two at the start.
