Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka

A rock fortress, tea trains through the hills and a southern coast of empty beaches – all within a few hours of each other.
Typical duration
9-13 nights
Best time
December to March for the south and west

Overview

Sri Lanka packs an improbable amount into an island the size of Ireland: ancient capitals, cloud forest, tea country, leopards and a coastline on three sides.

The classic route runs from the cultural triangle in the centre, up into the hills by train, and down to the south coast to finish. It works because nothing is more than half a day away from anything else.

The practical part

  • Private car and driver throughout
  • Reserved seats on the hill country train
  • Site entries and safari jeep with a tracker
  • Breakfast daily

Good to know

Sri Lanka has two monsoons on opposite coasts, so there is almost always somewhere with good weather – the route changes depending on your dates. Yala’s main block usually closes in September and October.

Detail worth having before you go

Getting there

Colombo is a short hop from Chennai, Bengaluru or Delhi. The island is small enough that everything after arrival is a comfortable drive.

Nearest airport
Bandaranaike International (CMB), Colombo
Permits

Most nationalities need an ETA before travel – it is applied for online and usually granted within a day.

Best months
December to March for the south and west coasts; May to September suits the east instead
Months to avoid
October and November, when both monsoons overlap
Typical budget
From about USD 130 per person per day sharing, with a car and driver throughout
Currency
Sri Lankan rupee. Cards are widely accepted; carry cash for the smaller hill towns.
Language
Sinhala and Tamil, with English very widely spoken
Health

Dengue is present year-round – repellent morning and evening is the sensible precaution.

What to pack

Light clothing, a warm layer for Nuwara Eliya, and something modest for Sigiriya and the Temple of the Tooth.

Small island, enormous variety. Ruins on Monday, tea country on Wednesday, whales on Saturday.

Questions we are asked about this one

Is the train to Ella worth the hype?

The Kandy to Ella stretch genuinely is one of the great rail journeys, and the Nanu Oya to Ella section is the best of it. Book reserved seats well ahead, and let your driver meet you at the far end rather than doing the whole line.

When can we see blue whales?

Off Mirissa, roughly December to April. Sightings are good in that window but never certain, and the boats can be rough – if anyone gets seasick, take the tablets before you sail rather than after.

Which coast should we choose?

It depends entirely on the month. December to March the south and west are dry and the east is not; May to September it reverses. This is the single biggest thing that shapes a Sri Lanka itinerary, so tell us your dates first and we will build around them.
