Madhya Pradesh

The temples everyone has heard of for the wrong reason, a riverside town nobody has heard of at all, and a fort on a cliff above both.

Overview

Khajuraho is known for about two per cent of its carvings. The rest – and there are thousands – are court scenes, musicians, farmers, animals and gods, cut into sandstone with a confidence that has not been matched since. Given a guide who is interested in the other ninety-eight per cent, it is one of the great sites in India.

Orchha, two hours away, is the surprise: cenotaphs along the Betwa, a palace built for a Mughal emperor who stayed one night, and almost no visitors.

Highlights

What makes this one worth doing

  • The western group at Khajuraho at opening time, with a guide who reads the panels
  • The eastern and southern groups, which most visitors skip entirely
  • Orchha’s cenotaphs from the river at sunset
  • Gwalior fort, which Babur called the pearl among Indian fortresses
  • The Betwa by coracle, and vultures nesting on the palace walls
  • A village meal in Bundelkhand, which is nothing like restaurant north Indian food

Suggested itinerary

One shape it could take

A starting point, not a fixed departure. Every element below can be lengthened, shortened or swapped.

Nights 1-2

Gwalior

Hotel below the fort

The fort, the Sas Bahu temples, and the Scindia palace if you like excess.

Nights 3-5

Orchha

Heritage hotel by the Betwa

Three nights doing very little: the palaces, the cenotaphs, and the river.

Nights 6-8

Khajuraho

Garden hotel near the western group

All three temple groups over two unhurried days, with an afternoon free.

Nights 9-10

Panna (optional)

A tiger reserve on the doorstep, quieter than Bandhavgarh and far less booked.

The practical part

Before you ask us to quote

What a quote usually includes

  • All accommodation, including a heritage hotel in Orchha
  • Private car and driver throughout
  • A Khajuraho guide who works the whole site, not just the famous panels
  • Monument entries as listed
  • Breakfast daily

Good to know

Khajuraho has a small airport with limited flights; most people come by road from Gwalior or by train. The sound-and-light show is skippable. Panna closes for the monsoon like the other central parks.

Detail worth having before you go

Getting there

Gwalior and Khajuraho both have small airports with limited flights; most people come by train from Delhi or Agra, which is comfortable and scenic.

Nearest airport
Gwalior (GWL) or Khajuraho (HJR), or by train from Delhi
Best months
October to March
Months to avoid
April to June, when central India is the hottest part of the country
Typical budget
From about Rs 9,500 per person per day sharing, with a car and driver throughout
Currency
Indian rupee. Orchha and Khajuraho are small towns – carry cash.
Language
Hindi and Bundeli, with English at the hotels and among guides
Health

Nothing specific. Temple sites involve a lot of steps and very little shade.

What to pack

Sun protection, and binoculars if you care about the carvings – much of the best work is well above eye level.

Orchha was the surprise. We stayed three nights in a town we had never heard of and did almost nothing, and it was the best part of the fortnight.

Questions we are asked about this one

Is Khajuraho only about the erotic carvings?

Those are perhaps two per cent of the sculpture and get all the attention. The rest is court life, music, war, farming and mythology, carved with extraordinary confidence. A guide who is interested in the whole site changes the visit completely.

Is Orchha worth extra nights?

More than Khajuraho, in our view. Cenotaphs along the river, a palace built for a Mughal emperor who stayed one night, vultures nesting on the walls, and almost no visitors. Three nights there is not too many.

Can we add a tiger reserve?

Panna is 45 minutes from Khajuraho and much easier to book than Bandhavgarh or Kanha. Fewer tigers, far fewer jeeps. It closes for the monsoon like the others.
