The Golden Temple is open to anyone, at any hour, and the langar – the free kitchen – has never stopped running. Volunteers roll roti on an industrial scale and hand it to whoever sits down, which is roughly a hundred thousand people daily and more at weekends.
Most people give Amritsar a night. It deserves three, one of which should be spent doing nothing but sitting by the tank after dark, when the marble is cool and the recitation carries across the water.

Heads must be covered inside the temple complex and shoes left at the counter – scarves are provided free. The Wagah ceremony fills up hours ahead; foreign passport holders have a separate enclosure and we send you early. Amritsar is very cold in January and very hot from April.
Amritsar has direct flights from Delhi and several international routes. The Delhi train takes about six hours and is comfortable.
Nothing specific. Amritsari food is rich and generous; pace yourself on the first day.
A scarf or head covering for the temple – they are provided free, but your own is easier – and socks, since shoes are left outside.
